The new Toyota Aygo has disappointed in the latest round of safety testing by Euro NCAP, achieving a three-star award.

A lack of new technologies that have become standard in recent years let the Aygo down in terms of occupant, as well as pedestrian, protection.

Dr Michiel van Ratingen, Euro NCAP secretary general, commented: "Side impact airbags and electronic stability control (ESC) are standard on many cars in this category and our tests demonstrate how important it is for manufacturers to keep their cars up to date."

In response, Toyota has pledged to update its safety technology offerings in the new year, ensuring all vehicles across its range are fitted with side thorax airbags, side head curtain airbags, ESC, passenger seatbelt reminders and ISOFIX technology in rear outboard seats.

Last month, the vehicle manufacturer announced the upcoming launch of the new Auris model in the UK. Moreover, with prospective buyers pleased to learn the vehicle has achieved a coveted five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.
